SUMMARY:Natural History of the Highlands
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Highland’s “Wildlife Hotel”\, The Grant Arms to discover some of the special Natural History of the Highlands. From Orchids to Dragonflies and Dolphins\, we offer a special opportunity to see some of the key species found in the region as well as the birds. Each day we visit a different habitat from Highland glens\, ancient Caledonian pine forest\, upland moors to the coast\, taking in some of special plants\, insects\, animals and birds particular to the Scottish Highlands. Some of the key species we hope to find include the beautiful Twinflower\, One-flowered Wintergreen\, Creeping Ladies Tresses\, Coralroot Orchid\, Lesser Twayblade\, White-faced Darter\, Northern Damselfly\, Northern Brown Argus and Mountain Ringlet amongst many others. The breaks are aimed at beginners and experts alike with a love of natural history\, as a chance to explore a wide variety of species and habitats of the Highlands in the time available. They aren’t intended to be intensive field studies in one particular specialist area\, but an opportunity to sample a selection of the flora and fauna of the Highlands and some of the species special to that region with a local guide. \nTo make a booking: \nEmail: info@highlandnature.co.uk\nTel: 01479821357\nOutside UK: +44 1479 821357\nMobile: 07875 094666 \nPrice £875pp

SUMMARY:Migration Special & Seabirds Cruise
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Highland’s Four Star “Wildlife Hotel”\, The Grant Arms for a spectacular autumn birdwatching four night break. As well as three full days fully inclusive guided birding\, you also have exclusive use of all the facilities provided by the Birdwatching & Wildlife Club (BWWC) during your stay. This includes an extensive Natural History library and Club room full of local wildlife information as well as a sightings board. There’s also the chance to meet other birders or groups staying at the hotel to catch up with their sightings and compare notes\, all adding to the atmosphere your stay. Also as the hotel is situated in the town numerous shops and facilities are all within easy walking distance…. \nSeptember sees autumn migration at its peak and as well a chance to catch up with some Scottish specialities we will spend more time exploring some of the fantastic lesser known coastal habitats of the Highlands\, Aberdeenshire or Moray in search of migrants as well as superb cruise across the Minch to Stornoway for seabirds and cetaceans! With probably 100 plus species over the three days we will focus on getting to grips with ID\, especially for those tricky waders and seabirds. \nDay 1 : Arrival. We meet up for an evening introduction at the hotel before dinner. \nDay 2 : Our first day is spent locally in and around Strathspey\, visiting the forests\, lochs and moors for a wealth of species and some classic Scottish specialities such as Crested Tits and Scottish/Parrot Crossbills and local Black Grouse leks.  We then visit the famous Findhorn Valley (Strathdearn)\, a classic Highland Glen\, in search of Golden and White-tailed Eagles as well as other raptors\, Mountain Hare\, Red Squirrel and Wild Goats. By the late September break\, Red Deer should be beginning their rut on the high crags\, and the sight of roaring Stags echoing through the glen not to be missed. \nDay 3 : We head across to some of the rich coastal habitats of the Outer Moray Firth\, a landscape of vast sky-scapes\, beautiful beaches\, river estuaries and secluded migrant hot spots. Depending on the birds\, we may visit the speactacular Findhorn Bay and the estuary of the Spey\, where a host of waders pass through at this time of year or check some of the many migrant hotspots. It’s a day with potentially a species list of 50+ so plenty to find on our travels.\n\n Day 4 : We join the CalMac ferry from Ullapool to Stornoway for a non-landing sea-watching cruise out across the Minch and back. Black Guillemot\, Puffin\, Skuas\, Shearwaters\, Storm Petrel and Terns as well as many other seabirds can be expected. Common\, Risso’s\, Bottle-nosed as well as other rarer species of Dolphin are often spotted and even a chance of Minke Whale. A superb day out at sea in the comfort of a modern ferry\, facilities include viewing lounge\, cafe and restaurant should you wish to take a break from scanning from the deck. \nDay 5 :  Departure \nTo make a booking: \nEmail: info@highlandnature.co.uk\nTel: 01479821357\nOutside UK: +44 1479 821357\nMobile: 07875 094666 \nPrice : £890pp

SUMMARY:Simply...Autumn
DESCRIPTION:Autumn in the Highlands is arguably the best time of the year for wildlife watching. Crisp mornings can give way to some surprisingly balmy days\, when the sun reflects the view of the hills in the waters of the lochs and the colour of the birch trees along all the roads can be simply stunning. Our autumn migrant birds will have arrived by now and the Red Deer stags may well still be bellowing their competition across the glens\, as they herd their harem lower down the slopes than in previous months. On the coasts numbers of returning wading birds will be building up\, as they come back to us from their far north breeding grounds\, together with Pink-footed Geese\, Whooper Swans and Sea Ducks. \nLast year your guides were Simon and Sue and highlights included a stunning male Red  Crossbill in Anagach Woods\, where Bullfinches and Crested Tits were feeding in the quiet woodland. Up Strathdearn the stags were still shouting their challenges to each other and creating an other-worldly feeling even before\, after some patient waiting\, a pair of Golden Eagles afforded a heart stopping few minutes\, diving through the air directly overhead. Crisp air\, golden woods\, and moments of pure wild magic. A visit to the Moray coast was also very special\, with a flock of Long-tailed ducks preforming their displays at Roseisle and good numbers of Whooper Swans close to the hide at Loch Spynie. \nOur “Simply” Breaks give you the chance to explore at your own pace\, in the comfort of your own car. Guides are on hand each day and have planned places to visit and things to see – but are always willing to adapt these plans to suit yours whenever possible. There is no additional cost for guiding and you return each evening in your own time to the comfort of a warm and comfortable hotel with delicious food and drink. \nCost: £836 Single\, £1504 double occupancy

SUMMARY:A Highland Midweek getaway With Birding Ecosse
DESCRIPTION:**Winter Warmer Special** \nBack by popular demand! \n*** Seaduck and Wader Special*** \nMonday 14 to Thursday 17 December 2026\n*** 4 Spaces Available*** \n  \nMonday – Arrival day \n\n\nThe magnificent Grant Arms Hotel\, Grantown on Spey \nArriving on Tuesday afternoon why not treat yourself to a couple of “local brews” in the hotels stunning Capercaillie bar\, prior to you enjoying your evening meal in the beautiful dining room. \nTuesday\nMerkinch – Black Isle\nThe patient killer – a Grey heronSituated here in the beautiful Scottish Highlands wintertime on the Moray Firth and Black Isle is a magical time of year. Tide and weather permitted we start the day off with a visit to a local nature reserve\, the exposed mud flats attracting hundreds of Ducks\, such as Wigeon\, Teal and Eider we may be lucky and see the regular overwintering American Wigeon. Winter plumaged Slavonian Grebes loaf about just offshore whilst Waders feed in the seaweed strewn pools and sand banks. And who knows\, we may catch a glimpse of the local Otter family as the glide effortlessly among the seaweed beds just off the beach or perhaps catch the flash of blue of a Kingfisher. \nAfter this we head over the Firth to the Black Isle\, one of my favourite Birding Spots. From Sandy Beaches\, mud filled tidal bays to fields and fields of arable farmland it is a cracking place to see a vast array of Species.  The area holds one of the largest and most easily viewable flock of Scaup\, sometime numbering several hundred\, Long Tailed Ducks mingle with Red Breasted Mergansers and Common Eiders. Several Thousand Pink Footed Geese roost in the area\, right in front of the best hide in the Highlands and with a careful check we may pick up Brent\, Barnacle\, Canada and White Fronted Geese as well\, and not to be outdone by the first location we may encounter our second American Wigeon of the day! \nThe mixed habitat attracts large Finch flocks to the areas\, Brambling and Yellowhammer mingle with Chaffinch\, Greenfinch and Linnets and only in 2016 the area turned up a Siberian Accentor! \nA fantastic varied day\, with an expected species list of 50+\, what a great way to start your new year list. \nAccessibility: No accessibility issues on this tour. \nPick up 0800 – Drop Off 1630\n\nWednesday\nThe Beautiful Moray Coast Male Long Tailed DuckThe Moray coast\, as yet a much undiscovered and unexplored Gem in the Highlands of Scotland’s bird watching scene. Beautiful fishing villages perched right on the coastline\, historic castles steeped in local folklore\, Typhoon Jets from the RAF giving a bit of excitement and of course lots and lots of Birds! \nThis area can host an amazing 25000 Long Tailed Ducks\, rafts of Common Scoter with their scarcer cousins the Velvet Scoter being seen in double figure numbers. Red\, Black and Great Northern Divers are all relatively common and White Billed Divers are becoming more and more regular. \n \n\n\nPurple Sandpiper\n\n\n\n\n\nWaders are another draw to this stunning coastline\, Purple Sandpipers are seen on nearly every trip\, Turnstones\, Sanderlings\, Redshanks and Knot are all common. \nNow the Moray coast is not all Sandy and Rocky Beaches\, oh no! it has amazing estuarine habitats\, fresh water Lochs and plenty of Farmland\, woods and scrub to keep us fully occupied on this full day Birdwatching Tour\, and it can produce some great passerines as well. 2017 saw the arrival of a Shorelark\, a species not at all common up here in the North\, in 2020 we were graced with a Grey Phalarope (or Red Phalarope to give it its correct name) and in 2022 A male Surf Scoter appeared with the Velvet Scoters right at the beginning on the month. All in all a great place to visit and with an expected 60+ species list for the day it is a brilliant way to bring on your bird identification skills along with rounding out your year list. \nAccessibility: No accessibility issues on this tour. \nPick up 0800 – Drop off 1630 Grey (Red) Phalarope\n\nThursdayGive yourself a treat!  Enjoy a long lie before you head down for your last breakfast at the Grant Arms.
